From Board Sports to the Board Room

*For those who identify as women, trans, non-binary, and their allies

Women on Boards is a leadership and surf coaching experience that translates valuable lessons from board sports to the boardroom.

Women’s surf history is still in the making - and we get to be part of it.

In recent years, the surf industry has made strides to become more gender inclusive and equitable. In 2018, the World Surf League committed to equal pay among men and women surfers in its events. Media representation of surfing and board sports from major brands has evolved and become more diverse and inclusive.

However, there is still progress to be made with regard to recognizing women+ in the sport, adoption of inclusive policies in competition at the highest level, and gender parity when it comes to compensation, corporate leadership within the industry, and more.

More women and girls in surfing would mean…

  • More overall market capture

  • More progressive design and technology in surf apparel, gear, and boards

  • More targeted coaching, retreat, and lifestyle experiences

  • More innovative surf instruction

  • More surf communities for girls, women+, mothers, families

  • More diverse surf lineups

  • More progressive competitive and free-surfing opportunities

  • More women+ who shred!

Core Values

The core values of Women on Boards are growth, connection, & service — to motivate progress in the sport and to support the impressive women who shape and participate in it.

About Me

Aloha e, my name is Dr. Lily Bui, and I’m a first-generation Vietnamese American. I’ve been surfing for 7 years and have received technical surf coaching in various parts of the globe. I also skate and snowboard.

Before Women on Boards, I built a career in academic research on climate change and social equity. I taught and mentored graduate students at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, received my doctorate (urban studies and planning) and masters (comparative media studies) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a dual bachelor's in International Studies and Spanish from my the University of California Irvine. In addition, I have years of professional experience across applied research, public policy, science journalism, consulting, and music.

Now, I am dedicating the majority of my time toward helping other like-minded women achieve their goals in the water and on land. I hope that my diverse experience confers value to your journey.

It is my mission to work with women+ who are determined to progress toward their goals in the water and on land.
